What is Threads?
Threads is a new standalone app from Instagram that resembles Twitter, but with a twist. This app allows users to share posts, photos and videos that appear on their followers' timelines. What makes Threads unique is that it brings the familiar Instagram user experience to a more text-based environment. Your Instagram bio, followers, blocked accounts and username are carried over to Threads. This creates a sense of consistency and a seamless experience across the two platforms.
The great thing about Threads is that it shows there is still room for innovation in the social media landscape. Although its basic structure is strongly reminiscent of Twitter, its integration with Instagram and the transfer of the Instagram experience to a more text-based platform make it a unique and fresh alternative. What's more, the decision to position Threads as a decentralised app allows users to interact with other apps such as Instagram itself and Mastodon, improving usability and connectivity.
Availability in Europe
Still, the launch of Threads is not without its challenges. Although the platform reached more than 30 million users within 24 hours of launch and has since passed the 55 million mark, it is not yet available in Europe at the time of writing this article, on 7 July 2023. This is because it is still being reviewed by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) to ensure it complies with EU privacy legislation. Despite these bumps in the road, it is clear that Threads could become a formidable player in the world of social media.

Personally, I am excited about the possibilities Threads offers. It is refreshing to see Instagram, an established player in the social media landscape, take on the challenge of creating a new and innovative platform. Threads represents an exciting new direction in the world of social media, and I cannot wait to see how it develops.
